Ballistic-Ohmic quantum Hall plateau transition in a graphene p-n junction

چکیده
Recent quantum Hall experiments conducted on disordered graphene p-n junction provide evidence that the junction resistance could be described by a simple Ohmic sum of the n and p mediums’ resistances. However in the ballistic limit, theory predicts the existence of chirality-dependent quantum Hall plateaus in a p-n junction. We show that two distinctively separate processes are required for this ballistic-Ohmic plateau transition, namely, i hole/electron Landau states mixing and ii valley isospin dilution of the incident Landau edge state. These conclusions are obtained by a simple scattering theory argument, and confirmed numerically by performing ensembles of quantum magnetotransport calculations on a 0.1 m wide disordered graphene p-n junction within the tight-binding model. The former process is achieved by p-n interface roughness, where a p-n interface disorder with a root-mean-square roughness of 10 nm was found to suffice under typical experimental conditions. The latter process is mediated by extrinsic edge roughness for an armchair edge ribbon and by intrinsic localized intervalley scattering centers at the edge of the p-n interface for a zigzag ribbon. In light of these results, we also examine why higher Ohmic-type plateaus are less likely to be observable in experiments.

Electron optics in graphene
In ballistic graphene, electrons behave in many ways similar to photons. By changing the electrostatic potential locally, we realized elements in graphene that are known from optics. But in contrast to conventional optics, gapless p-n interfaces can be formed showing a negative index of refraction and the effect of Klein tunneling. Even more, electron trajectories can be bent by applying a magn...

This is a colloquium-style introduction to two electronic processes in a carbon monolayer (graphene), each having an analogue in relativistic quantum mechanics. Both processes couple electron-like and hole-like states, through the action of either a superconducting pair potential or an electrostatic potential. The first process, Andreev reflection, is the electron-to-hole conversion at the inte...

We investigate transport in a gate-defined graphene quantum point contact in the quantum Hall regime. Edge states confined to the interface of p and n regions in the graphene sheet are controllably brought together from opposite sides of the sample and allowed to mix in this split-gate geometry. Among the expected quantum Hall features, an unexpected additional plateau at 0.5h/e2 is observed. W...

We predict and analyze radiation-induced quantum interference effect in low-dimensional graphene based n-p junctions. In the presence of radiation the ballistic transport of electrons is determined by two processes, namely, by the resonant absorption of photons near the "resonant points", and by the strong reflection from the junction interface, occurring at the "reflection points". There are t...
